Two men sit facing each other, engrossed in a card game. The moment appears focused and calm – a stark contrast to the otherwise lively and often hectic bustle of the Plaza de Armas in Santiago de Chile, where the scene is set. The composition deliberately employs a limited colour palette: the figures are rendered in shades of grey, whilst the background features bold accents of red and blue that echo the colours on the backs of the cards. The view from behind one of the players creates an observational, almost documentary-style perspective.
The image captures a quiet moment in a public space – an everyday scene, yet one worth telling.
Sebastian Lorenz
Sebastian Lorenz’s paintings are characterised by colourful and richly detailed depictions. He shows a keen interest in the human figure and often places it at the centre of his works. The people depicted are usually shown on the move or pausing briefly. Lorenz’s painting combines a realistic depiction of human anatomy with an emotional and expressive rendering of the figures portrayed. His works are often characterised by a certain melancholy and intensity, as he succeeds in portraying the feelings and moods of his figures in a striking manner. Through precise brushwork and the deliberate use of light and shadow, he also succeeds in creating a remarkable sense of depth in his paintings, which immerses the viewer in a captivating world.
