Franz von Stuck’s work *Die Wippe* (1898) depicts two female figures on a beam. Von Stuck clearly draws on an erotic genre⁶, as the shape of the beam can unmistakably be interpreted as a phallic symbol. Whilst one woman is shown in a slipped red dress with her breast exposed, the other is naked and kneeling facing the beam.
*The Rib* breaks with this composition. Although the two figures allude to von Stuck’s painting, they are not seesawing on a log but – as the title suggests – on a rib. This evokes the biblical creation story of Adam and Eve, in which the woman is formed from the man’s rib (Genesis 2:21–23). By being sewn into the canvas and highlighted, the rib takes on an almost sculptural three-dimensionality. The stitching suggests that stories can be constructed and reassembled.
