With *Ringende*, the work draws on the tradition of depictions of wrestlers in art history – from sculptures such as *The Wrestlers* (c. 1710) by Massimiliano Soldani Benzi to Gustave Courbet’s famous painting *The Wrestlers* (1853).

Whilst those works depict two muscular men in combat, this piece radically shifts the focus: the title reveals that the figures are not necessarily men.

The figures exist outside the binary gender system. They embody strength without resorting to stereotypical representations. Instead, the image depicts a wrestling match that can also be read as a metaphor for the negotiation of identity, intimacy and resistance.

Particularly striking is the seam that curves across the face of the figure on the right. It brings tension and power to the image, as if the struggle itself were tearing the canvas apart. At the same time, it appears like a wound – a visible trace of vulnerability that adds a fragile dimension to the physical intensity.
