The first cannonball dive performed at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, according to Pliny the Elder. Pliny the Elder was a Roman scholar, officer and civil servant who is best known for his *Naturalis historia*, an encyclopaedic work on natural history. He died during the great eruption of Vesuvius at the age of around 55. Pliny the Elder wanted to describe the eruption of Vesuvius in detail and ended up getting too close for comfort. A real daredevil, then… and who else but him could have performed the cannonball dive in the thermal baths, an act thermokinetically akin to his own fate?
A reflection on my ongoing row with the lifeguard at the Altötting outdoor pool, coupled with my Latin fiasco of 2007, when I managed to secure the worst Latin A-level result in Bavaria.
Non saliendum est! = No jumping!
