In her work, Jule Appel engages intensively with the human body and its relationship to space. She has been studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts since 2022 and is a student in Helen Verhoeven’s painting class. In her works, she focuses on everyday scenes and explores the subtle nuances of human presence. Her paintings are characterised by a sensitive engagement with colour and light, which not only shape the body but also evoke moods. Light functions here as a narrative element that creates intimacy, builds tension or highlights moments of pause. A central theme of her work is the visualisation of intimate moments – moments of stillness, vulnerability or self-forgetfulness. Proximity and distance, the unsaid and the fleeting, play a major role in this. Her images capture these moments without interpreting them unambiguously, thereby opening up space for individual associations. The compositions of her works are characterised by a clear placement of figures within the pictorial space. Physicality and expression take centre stage, directing the focus towards the human condition. Her works invite the viewer to engage with the quiet, often overlooked moments of everyday life and to reflect on how the fleeting can find a form of permanence in painting.
