Unglazed ceramic: 2025

A figure with feminine body proportions leans back and gazes up at the sky with an expression that is not entirely clear. As she has no pedestal on which to stand, her posture is both very open and somewhat precarious. The age-old debate between freedom and security is reflected in this everyday, simple pose. A balancing act just like the one the figure is performing – only this time, the viewer is also the one in charge.

  • Is the figure meant to impress, with breathtaking fragility in the face of impending doom?
  • Or is she meant to entrench herself, safe and sheltered like a Barbie in her original packaging, risking no scratches and remaining eternally young and unblemished?

It is clear that I had made the decision to expose the figure to her very own life by placing her in my garden and letting her gaze up at the sky. The discolouration was caused by moss and soil – traces of life, so to speak. I think it’s worth mentioning that other figures didn’t cope well with this sort of life and cracked during the first cold nights last year. (As the ceramics are unglazed, water always seeps in, and when the frost set in, it expanded and, for example, stole three fingers from one hand.)

Personally, I consider scars, discolouration, deformities and other traces of life – not just in my ceramics – to be an aesthetic asset. Warm regards.

My art mostly explores themes centred on people and humanity. There is always a moment of disorientation, bewilderment, magic, contrast or rupture. Whether it be the encounter between humans and animals, the dreams of the soul, emotions in all their facets

,

or the aesthetics of colour itself.

My materials and

subjects are as diverse as life itself. From Surrealism and Romanticism to abstract paintings and figurative ceramics, I am constantly struck by new ideas that gradually take shape in reality.
