Unlike other cyanotypes,
the images in the ‘Membrane’ series are monotypes.
They are one-offs.
The title ‘Membrane’ refers to the translucency of the circles depicted.
Circular areas are clearly delineated from their outer edges.
Yet they are permeable.
Sometimes the interior is filled,
at other times the form is defined by the filling of the exterior.
I was inspired by photographs of Pluto’s night side,
taken by the New Horizons space probe,
and the fate of Marsyas from Greek mythology.
Membrane #20 was created on acid-free, coloured watercolour paper,
resulting in this blue hue that shimmers with petrol-like iridescence.
The paper is mounted on a black-dyed MDF board fitted with hanging loops on the reverse.
Membrane # 20 is signed on the reverse and is dispatched with a certificate of authenticity.

She has always been interested in the poetic, mythological
aspects of everyday life and in the perception and staging
of environments. She is therefore not tied to any particular medium and
explores any kind of material she considers useful.
In particular, she is currently fascinated by cyanotype
with its (al)chemical attributes.
Cyanotype is a fascinating fine-art printing process:
After applying a light-sensitive solution to watercolour paper,
they are exposed using contact negatives.
This produces unique images in fascinating shades of blue,
some of which Anna Hoffmann subsequently transforms into other shades by toning
using plant essences.
