This narrative mixed-media artwork, inspired by Sir Edward Dyer’s poem ‘My Mind to Me a Kingdom Is’, presents a multi-layered depiction of the inner world of the mind.
Featuring collage elements that encompass both figures and abstract structures, the work reflects the complexity and richness of the human mind. The harmonious colour palette and the combination of different media and textures create a profound and thought-provoking artwork that celebrates the inner strength and freedom of the mind.
“My Mind to Me a Kingdom Is”
Sir Edward Dyer – Immortal Poems of the English Language
My mind to me a kingdom is;
Such perfect joy therein I find
That it surpasses all other bliss
Which God or nature hath bestowed.
Though I lack much that most would have,
Yet still my mind forbids me to crave.
No princely bearing, nor wealth to spare,
No strength to win a victory,
No wily wit to soothe a sore,
No charm to win a lover’s gaze;
To none of these do I yield as a slave,—
For why? My mind despises them all.
I see that abundance often leads to satiety,
And hasty climbers fall the soonest;
I see that those who are high up
are most of all threatened by misfortune.
These are gained through toil and maintained through fear;
Such cares my mind can never bear.
I strive to bear no haughty sway,
I wish for no more than is enough,
I do no more than I ought to,
Behold, my mind provides what I desire.
Behold! Thus I triumph like a king,
My mind is content with anything.
I do not laugh at another’s loss,
Nor do I begrudge another’s gain;
No worldly waves can toss my mind;
I brook what is another’s bane.
I fear no foe, nor fawn on friend,
I do not loathe life, nor dread my end.
My wealth is health and perfect ease,
And a clear conscience is my chief defence;
I never seek to please through bribes,
Nor to cause offence through merit.
Thus do I live, thus will I die,—
If only everyone would do as well as I do!
