Unglazed ceramic with natural marks: 2025
The work conveys great pain whilst at the same time being aesthetically pleasing to look at, which triggers an inner conflict in the viewer. At the same time, there is a contradiction between the chest muscles, which are tense to the point of tearing, and the comparatively relaxed shoulders. Furthermore, the unnaturally wide-open mouth may evoke associations with a baby bird begging for food.
Overall, the work is imbued with a great sense of tension, which seems at odds with its compact, almost ‘cute’ size of just a few centimetres.
In terms of contemporary politics, the figure fits into the discourse between feminism and patriarchy. The desire of a woman shaped by patriarchal conditions and people to take revenge and inflict pain of equal magnitude on the boy, the bloke, the ‘man’ who has caused her such suffering takes on a tangible form. A symbolic castration as a response to instinct-driven sexual violence.
The discolouration comes from the soil and the plants in the window box, where the figure has been situated for several months. It is only possible because the ceramic was left in its natural state, thus becoming a place for new life: mosses have taken root and transformed this relic of hatred into a place of life.
