Hunde sind seit jeher weltweit in Malerei und Skulptur präsent und tragen in unterschiedlichen Kulturen vielfältige symbolische Bedeutungen. Auch in Ostasien finden sich entsprechende Darstellungen, doch in Korea galten Hunde traditionell als numinöse, spirituelle Wesen. Man glaubte, dass sie durch ihren feinen Geruchssinn und ihr sensibles Gehör Geister und Unglück vertreiben konnten. Zudem wurden sie als Begleiter verstanden, die die Seelen der Verstorbenen ins Jenseits führen.
Ausgehend von einem Traum, den ich am 27. April 2023 hatte, beschäftige ich mich in dieser Arbeit mit der Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Hund als einer sehr persönlichen, emotionalen Liebesbeziehung, wie ich sie selbst erfahren habe. In meinen Gemälden erscheinen Hunde nicht als gewöhnliche Haustiere, sondern als mythische Wesen, die mit weiteren symbolischen Elementen kombiniert sind. Da viele Motive aus diesem Traum stammen und fiktive Figuren darstellen, habe ich sie – vergleichbar mit Illusionen oder Geistern – in Blau gemalt.

: “I have a keen interest in traditional arts in general and find particular inspiration in traditional Korean folk art. I express this through Western painting techniques which I learnt during my training. On the one hand, this serves to ease my homesickness; on the other, because traditional folk art is often more than just aesthetic objects. It frequently contains primal and symbolic elements that reflect the rich cultural history of a people and serve as a source of inspiration for me. The figures in my works are created through exaggeration, distortion and abstraction. Through my art, I tell stories about my origins, my dreams or even the story of a third person. I use various materials and techniques, as I select the most suitable media and formats depending on the theme in order to convey the content I have created in the best possible way."
