The series ‘Red Drawings’ consists of a series of drawings inspired by bujeok (부적, traditional Korean talismans) and reinterpreted through my own visual language.
In the past, Koreans believed that attaching these bujeok to their bodies, homes and other objects could ward off misfortune and bring good luck. The meaning and purpose of a bujeok depend on the symbols drawn on it. In Korea, the rooster is traditionally an important symbol for warding off misfortune. In times before clocks, roosters crowing at dawn would drive away the spirits that were only active at night. Furthermore, the image of a carp leaping out of the water symbolises the desire for success, for example in relation to pregnancy or exams.
Although bujeok may seem somewhat superstitious, I found their forms and the meanings they convey very interesting from a cultural perspective. I was particularly fascinated by the idea that these drawings express the wish that all people may overcome misfortune and lead a good life. The ‘Red Drawings’ series was created with this ancient Korean tradition in mind. They reflect my current state of mind as well as my hopes, longings, sense of security and affection.

: “I have a keen interest in traditional arts in general and find particular inspiration in traditional Korean folk art. I express this through Western painting techniques which I learnt during my training. On the one hand, this serves to ease my homesickness; on the other, because traditional folk art is often more than just aesthetic objects. It frequently contains primal and symbolic elements that reflect the rich cultural history of a people and serve as a source of inspiration for me. The figures in my works are created through exaggeration, distortion and abstraction. Through my art, I tell stories about my origins, my dreams or even the story of a third person. I use various materials and techniques, as I select the most suitable media and formats depending on the theme in order to convey the content I have created in the best possible way."
