With SPACE: Antimatter, the artist reverses the familiar logic of his own visual language. Whilst the works in the SPACE series are usually characterised by expansive colour fields, orbiting movements and structured chaos, this work appears as their complementary counterpart. Antimatter is not to be understood here as a physical concept, but as a painterly principle: as negation, as reversal, as the dissolution of familiar forms.
The clouds of colour seem to cancel each other out rather than coalesce. Energy does not discharge; it vanishes. The otherwise pulsating cosmos of the series withdraws into itself. Two dark, block-like fields pierce the canvas like artificial singularities – zones in which colour and structure seem to collapse. They mark places of disappearance, not of appearance.
The work evokes an atmosphere of dematerialisation. Instead of creating order, it destabilises. Instead of opening up paths of movement, it cuts them off. SPACE: Antimatter shows what happens when pictorial space ceases to expand and instead negates itself. It is a counter-universe, a shadow side, an image that knows the artist’s grammar – and consciously negates it.
Thus, antimatter becomes an aesthetic concept here: it is the invisible that touches the visible world; the force that neutralises forms; the silent counterpart to an otherwise vigorously expanding series. The work marks a point within the overall cycle at which the painting reflects upon itself, conceives its own opposite and, in doing so, opens up a new, fragile form of space.
