This artwork depicts a cowgirl on a horse in the middle of an S-Bahn train. A scene that seems contradictory at first glance, but that is precisely where the message lies: everything can be connected, even the seemingly incompatible. It is an image full of freedom, imagination and childlike curiosity.
The idea came from the two children I look after alongside my art therapy studies. The girl, with her passion for horses, and the boy, with his enthusiasm for S-Bahn trains, inspired me. I have brought both worlds together in this painting. An expression of playful creativity and the endless possibilities of the imagination...
I painted it in oil on canvas (100 × 130 cm). For the first time, I also worked with texture paste to create a 3D effect. This is visible on the cowgirl’s hat and the horse’s lead rope. The background has been painted with glazes, giving it a shimmering, almost surreal quality. I found the inspiration for these three-dimensional elements on a trip to Thailand, at a mixed-media exhibition in Bangkok.
The artwork is currently on display at the KULTURBUNKER in Bonn and cannot be dispatched until early August.

Vanessa Marscholek
Her painting is characterised by a sensitive handling of oil as a medium, through which intimacy and presence unfold simultaneously. Figures emerge and assert themselves within the pictorial space without being clearly defined. They remain in motion, open to interpretation. This creates a tension between visibility and inner experience, inviting viewers to reflect on their own notions of freedom and identity.
Vanessa Marscholek has been studying Art Therapy (BA) at the Medical School Hamburg, Campus Arts and Social Change, since 2023 and is currently in her sixth semester.
From late 2023 to early 2026, she volunteered at the Habibi Atelier in Hamburg, where she was involved in the conception and organisation of exhibitions for charitable purposes. In this role, she collaborated with over 40 Hamburg-based artists and supported, amongst others, the Sternenbrücke children’s hospice (2024) and the Löwenhaus children’s and youth centre (2025).
She lives and studies in Hamburg.
