Medium/Technique: Oil on canvas
Year created: 2023
Schwerin is a memory of my second home town, based on a real experience – it lies in the past. And yet the subject is so topical.
I created this painting in light of the threat to our society from the far right. In times when anti-social slogans are, sadly, becoming popular again, my medium is art – to show, to let people feel.
The scene is set against the picturesque backdrop of Schwerin and stands for all the beautiful places in the East and the people who make them what they are.
My protagonist, painted out of focus, is asked: why? Why do you hold this view? Why do you act this way? Why me?
Sharpness, a focus on the centre of the picture and blurring define the painting technique and are intended to set the focus. The oil colours are chosen to be muted; on this day, the sun shines through the cloud cover and casts a warm light on the subject’s face.
He remains in my memory – particularly because the light of time has caused him to change his demeanour. For me, this is the most beautiful aspect of Schwerin.
We need more light.
Judith Blodig
Her works have been represented by SKM since early 2022.
She works with oil paint on canvas and also explores other artistic fields through small objects and her voice.
Through oil painting, she captures the emotional reality of a moment on canvas.
She uses the play of light, surface qualities and spatial relationships to convey the intimacy of the moment and the connection between the subjects.
Inspired by her personal connections, her works create spaces for reflection on emotionality, distance and touch.
