That vending machine at school always left me with the difficult choice of whether to go for a green Balisto or a Snickers? Both, of course!... but often, for the sake of friendship, we’d opt for a Twix or some M&Ms when the whole back row was involved – to help us get over the disappointment of our latest school exams and to have had a bit of fun before the parent-teacher meetings.
The M&M’s vending machine looks like a plastic object or a sculpture, but it is actually a classic painting on canvas, mounted on a very thick stretcher frame and open at the back. With the ‘Vending Machine’ series, I’m exploring the interface between object and painting. At what thickness or depth of stretcher does it become an object, even though it is a painting?
What’s more, it’s always good to have a few snacks to hand in a pinch.
Exhibited at the Kunstmuseum Heidenheim in the exhibition ‘Echt jetzt’, 26 November – 3 March 2024. Cuneiform tablets, presumably sales contracts from the temple, circa the 21st century AD.
