The Invisible Work of Art: A Plea for Appreciating the Invisible

There is a persistent misunderstanding in the art world: Most viewers see only the finished work, the end product, and judge its value from this perspective. What is often lost in the process is an understanding of the immense effort that lies hidden behind every canvas, sculpture or installation. A brushstroke may seem, at that moment, like a random play of the hand; the colour composition like a spontaneous expression of a fleeting emotion. Yet this is an illusion. Behind every work lies a complex interplay of creativity, discipline and tireless dedication – aspects that remain invisible to the casual observer.

Art is not merely the manifestation of an idea, but also the result of years of dedication and a willingness to challenge oneself time and again. The path to a finished work is often marked by numerous attempts and just as many failures. Hours, days, sometimes months pass whilst an artist sketches, experiments, discards their work and starts afresh. It is a constant engagement with one’s own imagination and the question of how to make the invisible visible.

Yet this endeavour does not end with the creation of a single picture. The development of technical skills – the masterful command of one’s tools, the ability to mix colour nuances intuitively or to play with light and shadow – is also the result of endless practice. No one is born a master. It is a continuous process of learning that often takes place in silence and away from the canvas. This unseen work – the struggle for perfection and the deep engagement with one’s craft – is rarely recognised. Instead, art is all too often reduced to the product itself, as if it were merely the result of a spontaneous flash of inspiration.

The reality, however, is that art is a mirror of the artist – not only in the expression of their feelings, but also in the time and energy they invest in developing their skills. When viewers see only the result, but not the process, they miss the true value of art. It is like looking at the cover of a book without reading the words inside, or admiring the dance of a flame without feeling the wood burn.

That is why a work of art should never be seen merely as an end point, but as a juncture on a long, demanding journey along which the artist reveals many facets of their own self. The creativity unleashed in this process is no magical act. It springs from the courage to go beyond the obvious and create something that questions, expands or completely reinterprets reality.

We must therefore, as a society, learn to sharpen our gaze: art is not merely what hangs on the wall before us or sits enthroned on a plinth. Art is the invisible struggle for perfection, reflected in every successful detail. Art is the time the artist invests in shaping their ideas, and the effort they put into perfecting their craft.

So let us not measure the value of works of art solely by how they look or what they express, but also by what they conceal: the dedication, the failure, the struggle and the unwavering determination to create something that will stand the test of time. Art is more than what is visible. It is the sum of all the unseen moments that made the work possible in the first place.
