Description

Amidst flowing swathes of colour, a small fragment of a nautical alphabet emerges – a relic from a world of symbols and directions. Such signals were once used to provide orientation on the open sea and to convey messages over great distances.

In the picture, however, this symbol loses its unambiguous function. Amidst transparent layers of turquoise and blue-green, deep shades of colour and spontaneous lines, it appears as a quiet allusion to the human need for orientation.

The signal remains fragmentary, almost random – as if it had emerged from the flow of colour. Thus, a clear indication of direction becomes an open question: a sign that does not so much point the way as remind us that every direction is also a possibility.

Caren Weeks

Caren Weeks lives and works in Munich. After many years working at a design agency and studying graphic design, she turned her attention fully to painting as a freelance artist. Her thorough training in design continues to shape her sensitive approach to composition, colour and pictorial structure to this day. She is currently studying drawing and painting under Prof. Markus Lüpertz, where she is deepening her

exploration of the figurative tradition and the freedom of painterly processes.

At the heart of her work lies the tension between figuration and abstraction. Female figures frequently appear as silent protagonists – sometimes clearly present, sometimes fragmentary or embedded in open spaces of colour. They become vessels for moods, memories and inner narratives.

Weeks’ works open up poetic pictorial spaces that deliberately elude a single, unambiguous interpretation. Instead, they invite the viewer to develop their own associations and stories.

The artist draws inspiration from the people around her, from symbolic motifs, the theatre, fairy tales and dream worlds. From these impulses emerges a rich, atmospheric visual language in which reality and imagination overlap.

A distinctive colour palette and the balance between draughtsmanlike precision and painterly freedom characterise her works.

Caren Weeks works with oil, acrylic and charcoal on canvas.

"“For me, painting is a space of freedom. Here I can leave behind the expectations and fixed rules of reason and logic. The result is paintings that do not lay everything out in fixed terms, but rather open up spaces for moods, questions and the stories that end differently in the mind of every viewer.”
