The Tidescapes series forms the core of Janna Schnoor’s new body of work, created during her Erasmus semester in Bilbao. The acrylic paintings were created en plein air on the cliffs of Punta Galea. The view from the high cliffs is almost reminiscent of a bird’s-eye view. Janna Schnoor undertakes a radical process of zooming in: by omitting the horizon and the coastline, she isolates the surface of the ocean. Here, the sea loses its familiar form and dissolves into a rhythmic field of light reflections and currents – a state between recognition and immersion. Despite their specific geographical origins, the works retain a deliberate openness: the focus is not on the topography of the location, but on the painterly distillation of a universal experience of water.
Janna Schnoor
Janna Schnoor’s artistic interest lies in the precise and sensitive observation of her surroundings. Direct experience of the landscape is essential to her creative process. Her focus is on the coastal region of Schleswig-Holstein with its wide beaches, steep cliffs and small woods. Through the act of painting, she develops an intense connection with these places, gently exploring and understanding them. Her landscape paintings reflect the artist’s friendly familiarity with her surroundings. The landscape is not captured in a documentary style, but explored in terms of its atmospheric effect. Light plays a central role in this. The paintings glow from within, thereby conveying the transience and fragility of the moments captured.
