Description

Medium/Technique: Oil and acrylic on canvas, stretched on a stretcher frame

Year created: 2025

In the work, “as good as your projection is”, I explore the dynamics of projections in interpersonal relationships. This work marks a significant step in my artistic development, as I am working with a newly explored technique that lends the image an almost digital, distorted aesthetic.

The painting depicts my own body in a distorted representation consisting of numerous layers. The distortion changes depending on the viewer’s angle: viewed from the right, the figure comes together correctly in perspective, whilst from other angles it appears fragmented. This interplay of perspective and distortion symbolises how we humans may sometimes perceive others in a distorted way, particularly when getting to know someone or during moments of passion.

In any relationship, we tend to project our own desires, fears and expectations onto the other person, creating a distorted image of them. Only with time and deeper understanding does this distortion begin to fade, and we see the person as they really are. However, this process can lead to dissonance if the projected ideas do not correspond with reality. My work invites us to reflect on these inner projections and to question the boundary between self-perception and the perception of others.

The concept of projection is also significant in psychology. In this context, projection refers to a defence mechanism whereby one’s own unwanted feelings or traits are unconsciously transferred onto others. This can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts in relationships, as one does not perceive the other as an independent person, but rather as a mirror of one’s own inner world.

With ‘as good as your projection is’, I aim to encourage the viewer to perhaps reflect on their own projections, in order to foster more authentic and deeper connections with other people.

Painting

Her painting springs from spontaneous emotion, offering scope for experimentation and the pure joy of creative expression. Whilst academic art education often tends to suppress or conceptualise this authenticity, she carefully preserves it in her painting.

Her creative space allows her to transcend boundaries and make room for the unexpected, resulting in series in which she captures friends and colleagues in various depictions. During the Covid-19 crisis, she also portrayed her neighbourhood, ranging from unaffordable flats to the socially deprived area of Kottbusser Tor.

Her art extends beyond realistic scenes to include depictions of dreams on a surreal level, forming a creative bridge to her sculptural works.

art’s

sculptures are an expression of her artistic vision, which focuses on viewing the human being as an architectural structure. Inspired by her childhood fascination with her ancestors’ doll’s house, every room in this metaphorical house symbolises a unique facet of human character. She sees this complex doll’s house within every individual, representing the multi-layered nature of emotions and experiences. Her art explores the significance of self-awareness and delves into the unconscious microcosm that encompasses dreams and the vast world of the subconscious. Through her sculptures, Augart seeks to play with these elements from dreams and to build a bridge between dream and reality.
