‘Northern Lights’

Woodcut, self-printed

Print block: 21 × 21 cm

Limited edition: 10

‘Northern Lights’ is a woodcut that makes use of strong black-and-white contrasts and visible cutting marks. At the centre is a figure accompanied by an abstracted motif of light. I am less interested in a direct depiction of the Northern Lights than in the atmosphere they evoke: a moment of attention, orientation and inner contemplation.

The work deliberately utilises the distinctive qualities of woodcut: stark contrasts, angular lines and a raw, material texture. As a result, the image is not smoothed out, but remains tangible as a physically carved form. Between the figure, the mark and the fragmented space, a pictorial situation emerges in which orientation, presence and perception are interwoven.

I print all my prints as hand-printed proofs and use exclusively classic, highly pigmented printing inks, which have high luminosity and lightfastness, as well as high-quality acid-free paper.

‘nordlicht’ is published in a limited edition of ten signed artist’s proofs.

The premium edition 1–5/10 was printed on hand-torn 300 g/sq m Hahnemühle deckle-edged paper, measuring 40.2 × 35 cm.

The standard edition 6–10/10 was printed on acid-free 200 g/m² Boesner watercolour paper, measuring 46.4 × 33.5 cm.

Alexej Eisner

(*1990 Dusty-Kurgan-Tjube, Tajikistan) lives and works in Osnabrück and is studying painting and printmaking under Sigrun Jakubaschke, Thomas Rohrmann and Wolfgang Meluhn.

In his work, nostalgic, (post-)Soviet narratives are embedded within biographical elements of everyday life. In doing so, personal and collective memories of the traumas of Russian-German history are interwoven. Eisner presents figurative elements which, through expressive gestures, scraped surfaces and vivid colour schemes within a single composition, create alternating moments of clarity and decay, conveying a sense of authenticity and raw emotion.
