"Eunjeong Kim is a contemporary artist who currently lives and works in Germany. The artist Eunjeong Kim, a seeker of truth, explores the world of abstract purity. She continually explores the essence of pure forms and lines, creating an independent visual language free from predefined meanings. Through various media such as painting, digital collages, sculptural installations, 3D animations, AR and VR, the artist aims to expand the dimensions of painting and evoke different sensations."
Where and what are you studying?
At the HBK Braunschweig.
What themes feature in your work?
Generally speaking, ‘the blending of different stories and scenes’ Previously, the theme was ‘ideal and reality’ Now it’s ‘between analogue and digital’
What materials and techniques do you prefer to work with?
I prefer to work with oil paint. It makes me feel free when I’m painting.
Do you paint from reference images?
Yes, my reference images are created digitally. Digital collage, 3D animation, or VR
Which artist inspires you in particular?
Many artists. Albert Oehlen springs to mind.
What role do the colours you use play?
Pure fun
Elements of nature often feature in your work – what does that mean to you?
Nature used to represent the ideal for me, but now I wouldn’t attach any particular meaning to it. I grew up in Bergen and had to move to the city, and then to the capital. Back then, I missed nature, so I travelled a great deal. Now I capture all the everyday moments, and as they blend together, the meanings dissolve, leaving only forms that have emerged by chance. Because I love nature and see a lot of it, nature features heavily in my work too.
How would you describe your style, and how has it developed during your studies?
My style is becoming increasingly abstract through collage and digital media. During my studies, we weren’t able to work in the studio because of the pandemic, and I wanted to make good use of the time. As I’d always wanted to learn 3D software, I taught myself at home, and even got to grips with VR as well. New media have changed the style a lot.
What do you get up to outside of your studies?
I like watching YouTube, Reels and Netflix.
How did you come across the Student Art Market, and what has been your experience?
About 2–3 years ago, I heard about it from a friend, but I didn’t take it seriously because I didn’t trust buying art online without seeing it in person. Then, last year, I met an artist who regularly sells his paintings at the SKM. That’s how I got started. It’s lovely that so many customers from different places can see and buy my work. I used to be able to show my work only at exhibitions, mostly in Lower Saxony. Now my customers are in various federal states.
