Every year, art colleges and universities across Germany hold what is known as the ‘Rundgang’. But why is this actually such an important event?

A tour of the studios

For many people, art universities have an air of mystery about them. Studying art does not necessarily follow clear rules or career advice; much of what goes on behind closed doors is very exclusive and often not entirely comprehensible to the outside world. This is, of course, partly because there are very few places available each year and only a handful of students are selected from hundreds of applications.

Here you can view the work of Sophia Efremenko, who has exhibited at these tours on several occasions and is therefore a seasoned participant.

Open Day

Back to the tour: this is the day when all art universities open their doors and reveal a little of what goes on behind the scenes. Work from the past year is showcased, and the students are often there to talk about their art. As a visitor, you often gain an insight into the creative processes behind the artists’ work. In addition, the doors to studios, workshops and studios are opened. Anyone interested in studying art in particular has the opportunity here to chat with students and, possibly, lecturers.

The secret is revealed

If you’re interested in art and emerging talent, this is the right place to have a look around. The tour is usually preceded by a large meeting on campus, where the lecturers go through the work with the students and may also discuss it.

Tour dates

Most tours take place in July. We’ll let you know all the dates in good time, so you’ll have the chance to take a look behind the scenes at these special places.
