Your son
70 x 56.5 cm, oil on canvas, 2025
It all began with two workshops that, in the broadest sense, centred on memory. The starting point was two literary passages. The first was the opening of the book *Shame* by Annie Ernaux, winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature. In it, she describes a dramatic scene that shaped her life: how, when she was twelve years old, her father tried to kill her mother. In addition, the students read the famous scene involving madeleines from Marcel Proust’s *In Search of Lost Time*, in which dipping a madeleine into a cup of tea triggers a whole cascade of memories of her aunt in Brittany in the protagonist’s mind’s eye.
With reference to these literary examples, the aim of the first workshop was to recall an event or something that had shaped or even changed one’s own life.
The focus here was deliberately kept open.
In my work, I have explored autobiographical aspects of my family’s history that have had cross-generational effects on family dynamics.
I understand memory as resistance to forgetting – not in an objective sense, but as a painful yet creative process of rewriting.
