Description

Medium/Technique: Oil on canvas, stretched over a wooden frame in a custom-designed and built artist’s shadow-joint frame, tailored to the work.

Year of creation: 2023

–One-off–

‘Peaceful Fornication’ was created during a study trip organised by the university to Lake Maggiore, at the Casa Rossa artists’ residence run by a German-Italian art association. In the work, a seemingly contemplative landscape is juxtaposed with a physically unsettling figure. The person depicted sits on a balcony with their back to the viewer, gazing out at a tranquil, almost idyllic mountain landscape. At the same time, the body is depicted in an anatomically unusual posture: the legs are spread apart, almost twisted, and rise above the railing, creating a moment of physical disorientation.

A tension unfolds between tranquillity, intimacy and the blurring of physical boundaries, in which the title plays a central role.

Highly pigmented oil paints and glazing varnishes create an intense, almost physical effect of colour.

The handcrafted shadow-joint frame made of stained tropical wood transforms the painting into a deliberately designed object.

In my works, I use exclusively highly pigmented artists’ paints, which possess high luminosity and lightfastness. For each work, I design and build an artist’s frame myself, striving to achieve an overall effect through a combination of craftsmanship and conceptual care.

Alexej Eisner

(*1990 Dusty-Kurgan-Tjube, Tajikistan) lives and works in Osnabrück and is studying painting and printmaking under Sigrun Jakubaschke, Thomas Rohrmann and Wolfgang Meluhn.

In his work, nostalgic, (post-)Soviet narratives are embedded within biographical elements of everyday life. In doing so, personal and collective memories of the traumas of Russian-German history are interwoven. Eisner presents figurative elements which, through expressive gestures, scraped surfaces and vivid colour schemes within a single composition, create alternating moments of clarity and decay, conveying a sense of authenticity and raw emotion.
