‘Turning Point’
Media/Technique: Oil, charcoal and spray paint on canvas, stretched onto a stretcher frame within a custom-designed and built artist’s shadow-joint frame, tailored to the work.

‘Turning Point’ is part of the seven-piece series ‘Capricious Horses’, nominated for the 2025 Ingeborg Siebert Prize, which explores the tension between the will to live and the reality of having to die.
The series takes its starting point from a poem by the Soviet bard Vladimir Vysotsky, in which galloping horses appear as a metaphor for the inexorable march of fate. In this painterly exploration, the poetic and political imagery of the song is decoded and translated into a Western visual language.
At the heart of ‘Turning Point’ lies a moment of division. Whilst the carriage continues to follow its previous course of movement, the horse rears up and leaps in the opposite direction. This transforms the image into a constellation between continuation and deviation, determination and possible detachment. This creates a moment in which what appears to be fixed suddenly opens up. The small horse in the foreground can be interpreted as the birth of a new moment of destiny – as an echo, a continuation or a transformation. The expressive landscape heightens this ambivalence into a pictorial space in which fate is no longer merely a linear force, but rather a fragile and malleable order. The custom-built shadow-joint frames form part of the series’ concept.

In my works, I use exclusively highly pigmented artists’ paints, which possess high luminosity and lightfastness. For each work, I design and construct an artist’s frame myself, aiming to achieve an overall effect through a combination of craftsmanship and conceptual care.

The artwork is stretched onto a stretcher frame and dispatched in an artist’s frame – including a certificate of authenticity, the corresponding catalogue number and the artist’s signature on the front.

Alexej Eisner
In his work, nostalgic, (post-)Soviet narratives are embedded within biographical elements of everyday life. In doing so, personal and collective memories of the traumas of Russian-German history are interwoven. Eisner presents figurative elements which, through expressive gestures, scraped surfaces and vivid colour schemes within a single composition, create alternating moments of clarity and decay, conveying a sense of authenticity and raw emotion.
