In her paintings, Maria explores the intellectual and emotional experiment of how seemingly unrelated elements, borrowed from different contexts, might be underpinned by a similar leitmotif. Found visual and textual material is collected, stored, superimposed and assembled into fragmentary visual worlds. Layers of colour and text construct and deconstruct one another in an interplay; visual worlds become more concrete or dematerialise once more.
This work is part of the >The Thin Red Line< series, which consists of six paintings of the same format and engages with the film of the same name (in German >Der Schmale Grat<) by Terrence Malick. The works revolve around questions such as “What’s this war in the heart of nature?” or “What it’d be like to know that this breath now was the last one you was ever gonna draw.” These are questions raised by the film but not definitively answered; the paintings in this series are to be understood in a similar vein. They do not seek to provide answers to these questions, but rather to explore them conceptually within the pictorial space, to savour them, and to return to them time and again. The titles of the works are taken from the film and deliberately elude a narrative interpretation; rather, they aim to invite the viewer to form their own thoughts on the theme addressed.
Prints are signed on the reverse and dispatched with a certificate of authenticity.
