‘selfcare’
Medium/Technique: Acrylic, oil and charcoal on canvas, stretched onto a wooden frame in a custom-designed and built artist’s board frame tailored to the work.

‘selfcare’ is part of a three-part series exploring family relationships and various emotional states. I was particularly interested here in the tension between protection and self-assertion: the figure appears at once defensive, vulnerable and self-assured. The plants also play an important role, as they allude to nurturing and care. Thus, the work is not about a simple depiction of self-care, but rather its contradictions. The custom-built wooden frame made from stained softwood is deliberately part of the work and emphasises its physical presence.
In my works, I use exclusively highly pigmented artists’ paints, which possess high luminosity and lightfastness. For each work, I design and build an artist’s frame myself, aiming to achieve an overall effect through a combination of craftsmanship and conceptual care.

The work is stretched onto a stretcher frame and dispatched in the artist’s frame – including a certificate of authenticity, the corresponding catalogue number and the artist’s signature on the front.

Alexej Eisner
In his work, nostalgic, (post-)Soviet narratives are embedded within biographical elements of everyday life. In doing so, personal and collective memories of the traumas of Russian-German history are interwoven. Eisner presents figurative elements which, through expressive gestures, scraped surfaces and vivid colour schemes within a single composition, create alternating moments of clarity and decay, conveying a sense of authenticity and raw emotion.
