The Window
95x53cm, oil on canvas, 2026
For me, this painting represents a very personal exploration of interpersonal relationships, separation and the longing for closeness and physical intimacy. At its heart is the desire to be able to feel and reach out to another person once more, even though that closeness already seems lost.
The varying painterly styles within the work reveal that the two protagonists find themselves in separate worlds. They share neither a common space nor any connecting gestures or facial expressions. The absence of direct communication points to the emotional distance that has developed between them.
The window serves as a central symbol: it offers a view of her whilst simultaneously creating an apparent connection which, however, can no longer be established directly. It remains closed, thus signifying a relationship that is now accessible only from a distance and through memory. The past continues to exert its influence and becomes a space of longing, in which closeness is remembered but can no longer be experienced.
