Description

Media: Monolithographic print (oil), acrylic and gloss varnish on canvas

Year of creation: 2023

The printed motif is taken from an analogue photograph from the artist’s own private collection.

The work was created as part of a Master’s thesis in Fine Art and forms part of the ‘Fragments’ series. It depicts the fourth fragment in this series, which comprised a total of 12 works or ‘fragments’ for the Master’s thesis.

The work is composed, on the one hand, of technical and formal fragments and, in terms of content, is at the same time a fragment of the artist’s own everyday life.

Strong contrasts, subjectivity, narration and the visualisation of the artistic process – for example, through chance occurrences and apparent ‘mistakes’ – represent valuable means of image creation and reinterpretation.

Fragment 4 is characterised by the distinction between the layers. The pink paint is coated with a gloss varnish, whilst the black oil paint remains matt. This creates contrasts between the colours, between the layers and directly on the surface.

*The work is mounted on a stretcher frame and is sold and dispatched as such, signed.

*As the ‘Fragments’ series was created as a sequence, I would like to encourage them to be displayed as a pair or series. Information about myself and my work

My name is Luzie Pheiffer, I am 30 years old and completed my Master’s degree, specialising in Art, at the University of Siegen at the end of March 2024.

My artistic work combines the fields of photography, printmaking and painting. My analogue photographs serve as a point of reference for composing the images and as a starting point for further processing the works through printmaking and painting techniques using acrylic and lacquer paints. The works undergo a multi-layered process and are increasingly transformed, deformed, altered, abstracted and censored: Prints from the darkroom can be scanned and digitally altered; these are printed out and then produced as unique pieces using the monolithography process, during which unpredictable events often occur, which in turn have great significance for the subsequent painterly treatment. This ‘coincidence’ gives rise to supposed ‘errors’, which, for example, are pictorially  staged/ emphasised/ multiplied/…

The subjects of my photographs are intuitive moments from everyday life and my surroundings, which at first glance appear rather mundane. Through the camera’s limited frame and, ultimately, the limited image area of the photograph, a subjective value is attributed to them. Another motif is the interplay of light and shadow, which is characterised in particular by strong contrast and forms a network of abstract shapes, which are ultimately taken up and utilised individually on a painterly level.
