Half-Asleep Nun
170 x 75 cm, oil on canvas, 2026
The ‘Half-Asleep Nun’ reflects the historical role of models, who in
art history – who were usually very young – and serves here as a passive surface for projection.
This theme is transposed into a religious context – in which the nun, a
painting’s repetitive, derived symbol, which for me here represents purity and institutional
authority – in this work, she weaves art-historical references with a
examination of power, the gaze and institutional silence.
For me, historical evidence is extremely important, as it gives me the feeling of having
past and to be able to revive them from my present-day political context
. Religious themes have been speaking to me
; I am trying to address my scepticism and mistrust of the Church through my painting,
printmaking – I am not a believer.
I wish to open up spaces for reflection and encourage active engagement.
Complexity does not deter me; rather, it drives me productively.
