Put them all up against the wall
200x145x5cm, oil on canvas, 2026
The work ‘Set them all alight against the wall’ addresses the enduring traces of misogynistic power structures that have oppressed women for centuries. In a scene laden with symbolism, religious and patriarchal narratives burn together: Monks crucify Mary, whilst Jesus – the symbol of innocence – goes up in flames. The silent nun in the background embodies the complicit yet powerless witness. Historically, the depictions refer to the witch hunts of the 15th–18th
centuries, during which over 60,000 people, predominantly women, were tortured and killed.
These acts are rooted in misogynistic worldviews that demonised female power, knowledge and sexuality as a threat. Here, I transform this repressed history into a contemporary image of accusation – an act of painterly resistance against the continuity of patriarchal violence.
