‘accusare’
Media/Technique: Acrylic and charcoal on canvas, stretched onto a wooden frame in a custom-designed and built artist’s board frame tailored to the work.

‘accusare’ describes the oppressive feeling of being accused and condemned by a closed crowd. The figure in the centre is a self-portrait and, after the initial sketching, was scraped away again using steel brushes. This not only reveals her vulnerability but also inscribes it directly into the surface. I was less interested in a specific court of law than in an inner state: the pressure of losing one’s sense of self under the gaze of others. The custom-built wooden frame is a deliberate part of the work and reinforces its raw, heavy presence.
In my works, I use exclusively highly pigmented artists’ paints, which possess high luminosity and lightfastness. For each work, I design and build an artist’s frame myself, aiming to achieve an overall effect through a combination of craftsmanship and conceptual care.

The work is shipped stretched onto a stretcher frame and an artist’s frame, which has been designed, conceived and crafted by myself – including a certificate of authenticity, the corresponding catalogue number and signature on the front.

Alexej Eisner
In his work, nostalgic, (post-)Soviet narratives are embedded within biographical elements of everyday life. In doing so, personal and collective memories of the traumas of Russian-German history are interwoven. Eisner presents figurative elements which, through expressive gestures, scraped surfaces and vivid colour schemes within a single composition, create alternating moments of clarity and decay, conveying a sense of authenticity and raw emotion.
