The bedroom is an intimate space where you want to feel at ease. You spend a lot of time here, during which you may not always be consciously aware of your surroundings, but the atmosphere of the room is crucial. Art helps to create a calming atmosphere that makes you feel at ease. But what sort of art is best suited to the bedroom? Above all, art featuring calm, low-contrast motifs and muted, warm or cool shades such as blue, green, beige or terracotta – for example, abstract compositions, minimalist natural motifs or gentle colour-field paintings. More important than the exact motif is that the art complements the overall atmosphere of the room and is chosen in a size that blends harmoniously with the bed and the surrounding wall. A single, high-quality wall hanging above the bed usually has a calmer effect than many small, varied pictures.

Art for the bedroom – more than just decoration

Art for the bedroom is rarely just wall decoration; rather, it plays a key role in determining how restful the room feels. Unlike in the living room or study, where art can certainly have a stimulating effect and grab your attention, art in the bedroom should be more conducive to relaxation. Vivid, high-contrast motifs in red, orange or neon yellow can have a stimulating effect and are therefore rarely suitable as the main feature above the bed – however, they are perfectly fine as a small splash of colour elsewhere in the room.

Those who opt for abstract art in the bedroom benefit from a great deal of creative freedom: minimalist colour blocks, soft shapes and flowing transitions can easily be integrated into an existing colour scheme without overloading the room. Figurative motifs such as landscapes, plants or minimalist nature scenes are also well suited to the bedroom, provided they are composed in a calm manner and do not feature too many details at once.

Artwork for the bedroom: motifs that promote relaxation

When choosing pictures for the bedroom, it’s worth taking a look at colour psychology first: shades of blue and green are considered particularly calming; they have been shown to lower the pulse and blood pressure, thereby promoting restful sleep. Gentle earth tones such as beige, sand or muted brown also create a warm, cosy atmosphere, whilst very light neutral tones make the room feel open and peaceful. A picture for the bedroom does not necessarily have to be in muted colours, but it should complement the room’s existing colour scheme rather than clash with it.

When it comes to size, the rule is: it’s better to have one large picture for the bedroom than several small, scattered ones if you want to achieve a calming effect. Modern bedroom pictures therefore often feature a single, large-format piece as a clear focal point above the bed. If, on the other hand, you want to combine several pictures in the bedroom, make sure you stick to a consistent colour scheme and a calm, balanced arrangement – for example, in a row at the same height – so that even a group of pictures looks harmonious rather than cluttered. Even a picture in the bedroom featuring an abstract motif can be integrated well into a larger composition in this way.

Wall art, canvases & art prints for the bedroom

As well as the subject matter and colour, the material also plays a part in how a wall art piece looks in the bedroom. Canvas prints for the bedroom have the advantage that they do not require glass or a frame; they have a matt, non-glare finish and are therefore particularly well suited to the relaxed atmosphere of a bedroom. A canvas print in the bedroom also often feels more tactile and high-quality than a simple print, as the painted surface itself remains visible.

Art prints for the bedroom are a good choice if you’re looking for a specific design in several sizes or as a limited edition, perhaps to suit a fixed budget. They’re also easier to swap out should your interior design style change over time. An original painting, on the other hand, is a one-of-a-kind piece that cannot be replicated – an aspect that plays a special role for many, particularly in the bedroom as a private sanctuary.x

Bedroom design & inspiration: How to make art blend in with the room

If you’re looking to redecorate or redesign your bedroom, it’s worth considering art as an integral part of the concept right from the start, rather than adding it at the very end. You’ll often find inspiration for furnishing your bedroom most quickly if you first establish a basic colour scheme – perhaps based on wall colour, textiles and wood tones – and then match the art to it. This creates a harmonious bedroom design where furniture, textiles and wall art complement one another rather than competing.

Another tried-and-tested approach to bedroom design is to combine natural materials such as wood, linen or cotton with your chosen artwork – this further emphasises the grounding, calming effect of many soothing colour palettes. Anyone looking for bedroom décor ideas should also not be afraid to experiment with different textures: a matt canvas alongside shiny metallic accents or a textured rug prevents the room from looking flat or sterile, despite its calm colour scheme.

Ideas for bedroom design with art

If you’re looking for modern bedroom ideas, the combination of a large-scale abstract piece and minimalist, light-coloured furniture is particularly popular at the moment – it looks uncluttered yet full of character. Even more unconventional bedroom ideas, such as a small, curated group of pictures on an otherwise bare wall or a particularly large-scale painting as the sole focal point, can be successfully implemented without disrupting the calm overall atmosphere.

A simple rule of thumb has become established for pictures above the bed: the artwork should take up no more than about two-thirds of the width of the bed or headboard, so that the wall does not look overloaded. As for height: the bottom edge of the picture should ideally sit around 15 to 20 centimetres above the headboard; alternatively, the centre of the picture should be positioned at a height of around 150 centimetres above the floor. A cluttered, densely packed arrangement with many pictures of different sizes is generally not recommended for the bedroom – a neat row or a single large piece creates a more tranquil overall effect here.

Paintings for the bedroom: Why originals are worth it.

A painting for the bedroom differs from a print primarily in its uniqueness: every brushstroke, every layer of paint exists only once. Particularly in the bedroom – which for many is the most personal room in the home – many people value precisely this distinctive quality of an original painting over an art print. A painting for your bedroom doesn’t necessarily have to be large-format or expensive – often, a medium-sized original is enough to give the room a personal, distinctive character.

When choosing a painting for the bedroom, it’s worth paying the same attention to colour and subject matter as you would with pictures and art prints: calm, muted colour schemes and compositions that aren’t too busy usually suit the bedroom better than highly expressive, high-contrast works. If you’re unsure, you can also hang a smaller painting elsewhere in your flat on a trial basis and see how the colours look in both natural and artificial light before finally hanging it above your bed.

Frequently asked questions about art in the bedroom
