A mysterious place, a quiet encounter, a warm feeling. In nature, amidst greenery and colour, light and shadow, stillness and vitality, this is not uncommon.
I live in a city and miss this open secret often enough to make it the subject of my art. This is the first painting in a series that has only just begun.
For centuries, humans have lived alongside animals, exploiting them, slaughtering and eating them, loving them and trusting them. The relationship between humans and animals is surely at least as diverse as that between individual humans. Thanks to technological and other developments, it is becoming increasingly clear just how intelligent not only dogs and cats, but also corvids, parakeets and, it seems, every other animal can be. It is as though the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge had not only opened our eyes to our own nakedness, but also clouded our view of the abilities of other species.
I advocate for openness and encounters on equal terms between humans and animals. For consideration, prudence and goodwill. Not only for humans who cannot speak, but also for other living beings who speak a different language.
Is that too much to ask?
I believe it is possible. I live by it. I believe it is the right thing to do.
